Ayurvedic Management of Vicharchika (Eczema) – A Case Study

Abstract

Introduction: Skin is the largest integumentary system of the body and serves as the primary physical barrier against various pathogenic agents. Due to their easy interaction with the external environment, skin is more prone to different skin infections. In Ayurveda, majority of the dermatological disorders have been placed under the topic ‘Kushta’. Vicharchika is one among the Kshudra kushtas. The clinical features of Vicharchika are Kandu, Pidaka, Shyava and Bahusrava. Modern Ayurvedic scholars have simulated Vicharchika with Eczema. Eczema is a non-contagious inflammatory disease of the skin characterized by itching, lichenification and pigmentation. In recent days, patients encounter physical, mental and socioeconomic distress in the society due to their abnormal appearances. Modern medicine lacks effective therapeutic agents except for some antihistamines and topical steroids which may impart serious systemic side effects. Methodology: A 52 year old male presented with chief complaints of severe itching, burning sensation and blackish red discoloration over anterior aspect of both shoulders since 2 months. Based on the clinical presentations, the diagnosis was made as Vicharchika (Eczema). The patient was treated with Shamana Aushadhas (Oral medications) and Kushtahara Kriyas. Result: Effective improvement was noticed within 14 days of treatment. Conclusion: This single case report highlights that Ayurvedic treatment is more effective in management of Vicharchika in short duration.
