A Comprehensive Review of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) and Its Management through Ayurveda

Abstract

Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is a growing global health concern, often associated with metabolic syndrome, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidaemia. NAFLD, a condition characterized by the accumulation of fat in the liver without alcohol consumption, can progress to more severe liver conditions such as Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH), cirrhosis, and liver failure. This review explores the pathophysiology, clinical presentation, and management strategies of NAFLD, with a focus on integrating modern medical approaches and Ayurveda. The pathophysiology of NAFLD is closely linked to insulin resistance, dyslipidaemia, and oxidative stress, leading to disturbances in liver metabolism. Risk factors include obesity, diabetes, and hypertension, and the disease is often detected incidentally during routine health check-ups. Ayurveda offers promising therapies, focusing on restoring the balance of doshas and improving digestive function. Treatments like Agnideepana (stimulation of digestive fire), Srotosodhana (purification of channels), and the use of herbal formulations such as Sharapunkha, Guduchi, and Triphala are explored as effective adjuncts to conventional treatments. Emphasis is placed on a personalized approach, incorporating both preventive and therapeutic measures through dietary regulation, stress management, and physical activity.
