Healthcare Operations in Ayurveda: Integrating Traditional Wisdom with Contemporary Management

Keywords:

Abstract

Introduction: Healthcare aims to promote physical, mental and social well-being through preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic services. Ayurveda, with its foundational principles of preserving health and managing disease - “Swasthasya swasthya rakshanam, aturasya vikara prashamanam”—aligns closely with these modern healthcare objectives. Methodology: The study included analysing classical Ayurvedic texts along with contemporary research on healthcare management to examine administrative components such as clinical delivery based on the chikitsa chatuspada, the incorporation of Electronic Health Records (EHR) for evidence-based practice, and the relevance of predictive, preventive and personalised medicine within Ayurvedic perspective. Result: The study indicates that integrating these classical concepts with modern management strategies enhances clinical efficiency, strengthens documentation systems and improves decision-making, while also demonstrating that Ayurvedic principles align well with emerging global healthcare models. These findings further reveal that operational gaps, lack of structured administrative systems, and insufficiently trained personnel remain challenges that hinder optimal functioning of Ayurvedic healthcare institutions. Discussion: The review emphasises that bridging traditional Ayurvedic wisdom with modern technological and administrative approaches is essential for building reliable, efficient and patient-centred healthcare delivery. Strengthening documentation practices, adopting digital tools like EHR, improving workforce training, and applying standardised management protocols can significantly enhance the credibility and effectiveness of Ayurvedic hospitals. Overall, the review concludes that an integrated approach combining classical knowledge with contemporary administrative frameworks is crucial for advancing high-quality and future-ready Ayurveda-based healthcare systems.
